  Arabian Horse Association holds Endurance Race

  • BERWICK -- The Seaway Valley Arabian Horse Association held their 2nd Annual Stormont Endurance Race along trails in the Berwick Forest on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. The world class competition attracted over 65 participant, some from as far away as California and Ireland.

    Riders could participate in either 80 km, 120 km or 160 km runs for Junior and Senior riders. The riders could use the race to work on qualifications for the next World Equestrian Games to be held in France next August. It was also an opportunity for young riders under the age of 21 to qualify for the Ontario/Canadian Team at the North American Junior and Young Riders Championships held annually at the Kentucky Horse Park, and the World JYR Endurance Championships held every two years.

    Completion certificates for the 40 km race on Sat., Aug 31 were Sharon Anderegg from Crysler, Tom Anderegg also from Crysler, Lesley Danko from New Lowell, Lisa Drescher from Harrowsmith, Dagmar Downes from Mountain Grove, Melanie Roy from Orleans, Dr. Erin Rubert from Woodville, Heather Pople from New Lowell, Colleen Perkins from Merrickville, Kathy Sommerville from Vaudreuil-Dorion, QE, Pat Rice-Kuffner from Richmond, Kendra MacKinnon from Cornwall, Sylvia Hanton, also from Cornwall, Lori Barkley from Ingleside, Suzanne Durocher from Alexandria and from St-Lazare, QE, Patricia Calleya and Christian Valois.

    In Saturday's 80 km race, first place went to Melody Blittersdorf from Jefferson, VT with a time of 7:39:29 and coming in second was Debbie Buick from Clifford, ON.

    In the 120 km run held on Sat., Aug. 31, from first place to sixth were Dave Augustine from Frenchtown, NJ With a time of 8:59:00, Holly Corcoran from Effort PA., Barbara Hershberger from Waynesboro, PA, Sally Jellison from Muncy, PA, Nancy Zukewich from Ottawa, ON, and Kim Woolley from Finch, ON.

    Coming in seventh place was the young rider Stephanie McLeod of Oka, QE with a time of 11:22:00. Katherine Gardener from Coventry, RI, also a young rider followed with a time of 11:22:01. Cherly Van Deusen from New Smyrna Beach, FL came in ninth and rounding out in tenth place was another young rider, Savanah Wilson of Kemptville, ON.

    Competition certificates were handed out to the following riders who completed a 40 km race on Sun., Sept. 1: Dagmar Downes from Mountain Grove, ON, Lisa Drechsler from Harrowsmith, ON, Dr. Erin Rubert from Woodville, ON, Mandy Jansen Van Doom from Alliston, ON and Elaine Steele from Mountain Grove, ON.

    The 80 km runs winners were, from first place to seventh: Holly Corcoran from Effort, PA with a time of 13:29:04, Emma Webb, from Flesherton, ON, Madaline Keilholtz from Waynesboro, PA, Melody Blittersdorf, from Jefferson, VT, Denise Blanchet, from Cornwall, ON, and Leach Jansen Van Doom and Jenna Jansen Van Doom, both from Alliston, ON.

    In the 120 km race, first place went to Wendy MacCoubrey of Ste Justine De Newton, QE. MacCoubrey finished her race in 8:19:00. She was followed by Krista Alderice from West Windsor, VT, Monica Grundmann from Bainsville, ON, Dessia Miller from Berwick, ON and Savanah Wilsonform Kemptville, ON.

    Winners for the 160 km race were Margaret Sleeper from Frenchtown, NJ with a time of 10:54:55 and Cheryl Van Deusen from New Smyrna Beach, FL with a time of 18:37:00.

    The Endurance Race is the only Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) qualifying event to be held in Eastern Canada and one of only four being held across the country.
