What is a Livestock Medicines Course
• An education program addressing farmer, farm family, animal health and safety issues.
• Promotes the responsible use and safe handling of livestock medicines used on-farm.
• Addresses on-farm food safety issues which builds consumer confidence.
• Developed by the Livestock Medicines Education Committee, representing commodity and industry partners.
• LMEP courses are available in Dairy, Beef, Veal, Sheep & Goat, Poultry and Fur-Bearing. An equine course is being developed
• The course generally runs from 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m
The course covers three basic objectives:
• develop a team approach by assigning responsibilities
• read, understand and follow the label
• identify ways of improving on farm management systems
The course and accompanying material are designed specifically for producers, with practical information that can be put to immediate use on the farm:
• to increase returns
• to enhance food safety
• to build consumer confidence
• to complement Quality Assurance Programs developed by commodity organizations
• to share ideas and learn with other livestock producers.
In the future, successful completion of this course or written instructions from a veterinarian will be required in order to purchase certain designated non-prescription livestock medicines. The target date for this requirement is April 1st, 2003.

• You need to take one commodity course to receive your LMEP certification. If you produce more than one livestock commodity on your farm, you may choose which course you want to attend.
• You can buy any commodity manual. Please call 1-877-480-9992.
• If the livestock commodity you raise on your farm does not have it's own course, the beef course is considered the most generic. It was used as the template for creating all of the other courses.
