The Grenville Federation of Agriculture met on March 11 with a new slate of directors for 1999-2000. After a brief introduction of the directors it was down to business.
At our monthly meeting the GFA goals and objectives were discussed. It was agreed that we would push to have a 1999 Food Grains Bank project. This year, GFA director Lyle Johnston has agreed to inquire on a parcel of land to get our project underway. if you would like to donate your time, equipment, seed, fertilizer, Lyle would like to hear from you. If you can contribute with a financial donation everything is appreciated and going to a good cause.
Another major commitment this year is to get involved with the townships within Grenville County. At our March Federation meeting, Cathy Willoughby spoke to the GFA directors on the importance of having "farming" representatives on town council. Cathy gave us examples of situations arising that farmers are unaware of. It is important that we are aware of changes happening in our neighbourhood and there is no better way then talking with a councillor or sitting on an advisory committee. Again, the GFA directors cannot do all the necessary work and if you are interested in getting involved in your township please contct your GFA area representative or president Adrian Wynands.
The GFA directors are proud to help sponsor the 1999 Inter County 4-H dairy judging competition at KCAT on August 4. This event gives 4-H members an opportunity to compete beyond the local level to develop decision making and communicative skills and to teach young people how to evaluate dairy cattle. We wish the organizers a successful competition.
