Bring it back! Return unwanted livestock medicine
By Craig Richardson
- Animal Care Specialist, Kemptville
Producers have the opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted livestock medicine through a new pilot program launched by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs (OMAFRA). Livestock producers may return expired or partially full containers of unwanted medicine as well as empty containers to five participating Eastern Ontario livestock medicine outlets. Products with drug identification numbers (DIN), vaccines and other livestock medicines may be brought back to the five licensed outlets for collection. Pilot co-sponsor, Medical Waste Management Inc.(MWM), supplied the outlets with six and a half gallon leak proof re-sealable pails to hold the unwanted medicines. When the pails are full, they will be shipped back to MWM for safe disposal.
The five participating outlets are:
1) Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers, Carleton Place, (613) 257-2714,
2) Agri-West Kemptville store, (613) 258-3401,
3) M & R Feeds & Farm Supply, Micksburg, (613) 735-3689,
4) Co-op Agri-Est, St. Isidore, (613) 524-2828,
5) Kinburn Farm Supply Ltd., Kinburn, (613) 832-1130.
After assessing the success of the "Bring it Back!" pilot, the Ministry hopes to have volunteer retailers acting as collecting sites for unwanted livestock medicine across the entire province. For more information contact Craig Richardson, Animal Care Specialist, OMAFRA at 613-258-8298.
