Eastern Ontario Workhorse Workshop
Ruth Freeman is coordinating a five day practical workshop on the use of horses in harness. The course is instructed by Earl Sadler and local teamsters who provide their horses for students to work with (John Male, Ron Townsend, Aden Freeman, Gerard Piche, Mike Kelly).
The course will cover the following topics: Harnessing and Hitching; Driving; Skidding Logs; Harness Design and Function; Hitching to Vehicles; Plowing; Discing; Workhorse Anatomy; Health Care and Feeding; Other Farm Practices. Each participant will receive an information kit with charts, feeding notes, directories, harness charts, harnessing notes and stable design. Teamsters and their families will host barn tours and dinners to show how they care for their animals and equipment and manage their stables.
The course runs from Aug. 21 to Aug. 25 8 am to 5 pm each day. The course location is Clohbarra Stables, Athens. Barn tours and dinners are arranged for three evenings.
