The case against Hay Bay Genetics will resume in a Napanee courtroom February 19. In 1999 Environment Canada laid a series of charges against the hog farm under the federal Fisheries Act.
The government alleged the farm "permitted the deposit of barnyard storm sewer effluent in an area and under conditions whereby the effluent could enter Lake Ontario’s Bay of Quinte."
The trial opened in early December with the Crown presenting its case. Now, the farm’s owners, the Davis family, will be presenting their defence.
The charges were laid against the farm itself and two family members following an investigation by the Ontario regional office of the Environmental Protection Branch.
